My first round of IVF didn’t work, should I try again?

IVF is a blessing for many couples, however it’s also important to discuss what happens when IVF doesn’t end in a successful pregnancy. You may begin with optimism, but unfortunately not every treatment will end the way you hope.

It’s normal to feel frustrated, sad and disappointed. You might be wondering if you want to try again, especially if this wasn’t your first attempt at falling pregnant through IVF.

If your first round of IVF didn’t work, rest assured the fertility team at Grace Private are here for you. After supporting many women through their IVF journeys, we understand what you are going through and know it’s not an easy situation to deal with.

Ultimately, the decision to try again is yours, however if you decide to go through another round of IVF there are a few important things to consider first.

Get your head around it emotionally

It’s important to understand that it wasn’t your fault. It’s normal for women to blame themselves if for some reason their IVF treatment doesn’t end in a successful pregnancy. Remember, everyone is different and will react differently to treatment.

Moving onto another round of IVF treatment without rationalising this for yourself prior, may end in stress and disappointment. IVF treatment can be emotionally taxing, so it’s essential that you have processed the results of the first round before you move onto another.

If you need a little help processing the results of the treatment, our Gold Coast psychologists Karen White and Kerryn Blunt have years of experience helping women going through fertility journeys and can help you get through it as best as you can.

Understand why the first round failed

It’s also important to understand what happened with your first round of IVF, in case you need to change things before your next round starts.

Find out why the first round didn’t work, was it to do with implantation? Was it the quality of the eggs? When you know what happened you’ll be able to adjust your treatment plan for your next cycle.

Consider your finances

We know undergoing IVF treatment is an important decision for many women, however it can also impact your finances if you are having to pay for multiple rounds. When you’re trying to fall pregnant you don’t need the additional financial stress, so we’d always recommend only beginning the next round of treatment when you are comfortable with the expense.

Take a break if you need it

While you may be eager to get started on your next round of IVF treatment, it may help to take a little breather and take care of yourself before you begin. Back-to-back cycles can be both physically and mentally draining, so taking a break in between can help you recharge, refresh and ensure you’re in the best condition before starting your next round.

Practice self-care, improve your mental health, exercise, eat a healthy diet and do the things you need to do to feel joy and happiness before you kick off your next treatment.
