Understanding the signs of ovarian cancer

At Grace Private, we aim to build a greater understanding of the signs and symptoms of ovarian cancer to ensure that our community is equipped with the knowledge to recognise potential symptoms. By sharing information and fostering awareness, we hope to empower women to prioritise their health and seek medical attention as soon as possible.

Recognising the signs of ovarian cancer

Currently there is no reliable screening test for early detection of ovarian cancer. This means that, unlike other cancers, ovarian cancer often isn’t found until the disease has progressed further.

Detecting ovarian cancer as soon as possible may optimise treatment outcomes and survival rates. By recognising the signs and symptoms and seeking medical attention as soon as possible, you can increase your chances of receiving a timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Noticing the symptoms as early as possible may allow for more effective interventions, including surgery, chemotherapy, and targeted therapies, which may help contain or eliminate the cancer before it spreads.

Signs and symptoms include:

Here are some key signs to watch out for:

  • Persistent abdominal bloating: Feeling bloated or full even after small meals, along with persistent abdominal discomfort or pressure.
  • Pelvic or abdominal pain: Unexplained pain in the pelvic area, lower back, or abdomen that doesn’t ease over time.
  • Difficulty eating or feeling full quickly: Loss of appetite, feeling full after eating very little, and changes in bowel habits.
  • Urinary symptoms: Increased urgency or frequency of urination, or difficulty emptying the bladder completely.
  • Unexplained weight loss: Losing weight without trying, especially if it’s significant and unexplained.
  • Changes in menstrual cycle: Irregular periods, heavy bleeding, or bleeding between periods.
  • Fatigue: Persistent tiredness or fatigue, which doesn’t improve with rest.
