We all know that pregnancy comes with plenty of aches and pains, so sometimes it’s easy to dismiss a new feeling as “normal”. After all, your body is doing something pretty extraordinary. Ligaments are stretching, hormones are shifting, your centre of gravity is changing, and there’s a human growing inside you!
But the truth is, not all pregnancy aches and pains should be brushed off. There are some types of pain that can be your body telling you something needs attention.
One of the biggest misconceptions about pregnancy is that you should simply “push through” discomfort. In reality, your Grace Private obstetrician would almost always prefer you mention something that turns out to be nothing rather than stay home worrying or ignore something that needs treatment.
We want to remind you that you know your body better than anyone else. If something feels different, more intense, or simply doesn’t seem right, it’s always worth having a conversation.
Many pregnant women experience lower back pain, round ligament pain or general pelvic discomfort as their pregnancy goes on. As your baby grows, your body adapts in incredible ways, and those changes can definitely feel uncomfortable.
However, it’s important to remember that pain that’s severe, persistent, sudden or accompanied by other symptoms deserves medical attention.
For example, severe abdominal pain, pain that’s localised to one side, intense headaches that don’t improve, chest pain, pain associated with bleeding, fever or reduced fetal movements should never be dismissed as “just pregnancy symptoms.”
Sometimes these symptoms relate to conditions that need assessment as soon as possible, while other times they have a simple explanation. Either way, it’s not something you should be trying to diagnose yourself through late-night AI or Google searches.
We hear many women say they don’t want to “make a fuss” or waste their doctor’s time. But pregnancy isn’t the time to push through pain just because you don’t think it’s serious enough.
When you seek advice early, it often allows us to check for problems before they become bigger. Even when everything checks out perfectly, having that reassurance from your healthcare team can make a huge difference.
We want to remind you that you never need to apologise for asking questions about your pregnancy. Our Gold Coast obstetricians believe looking after yourself is part of looking after your baby. Pregnancy may naturally shift focus towards your baby, but your health matters just as much.
When you ignore persistent pain, it doesn’t benefit anyone. Addressing pain early can often improve your own well-being throughout pregnancy and help you enjoy this special time of your life comfortably.
Perhaps it’s pelvic pain affecting your ability to walk, back pain that’s disrupting your sleep or symptoms that simply don’t feel right. Whether it comes from your obstetrician, your GP, physiotherapist or another member of your maternity care team, support is here for you at Grace Private.
Many women instinctively know when something feels different, even if they can’t quite explain why. That intuition should never be ignored. If something is concerning you, let someone know. It’s always better to ask the question than spend hours wondering if you should have.
At Grace Private, we’re here to support you through every stage of pregnancy with compassionate, personalised care. Our experienced obstetricians understand that every pregnancy is different, and no concern is too small to discuss.
If you’re experiencing ongoing discomfort, notice a new symptom or simply want reassurance that everything is progressing as it should, we’re here to listen, investigate when needed and help you feel confident throughout your pregnancy.
Some aches and pains are a normal part of pregnancy, you should never feel like you have to suffer in silence. If you’re experiencing pain during pregnancy or have concerns about your symptoms, contact your Grace Private obstetrician.
