What to expect during your first gynaecology appointment

Have you been referred to a gynaecologist for the first time? Are you wondering what happens at your appointment and if you need to prepare?

At Grace Private, your first appointment usually focuses on understanding your symptoms, reviewing your medical history and discussing the most appropriate steps for your care.

Our team of experienced Gold Coast gynaecologists provides specialist care for women of all ages, treating everything from heavy menstrual bleeding and pelvic pain to endometriosis, PMOS, abnormal cervical screening results and complex gynaecological conditions.

Why might you see a gynaecologist?

There are many reasons your GP may recommend seeing a gynaecologist. Some women are looking for answers about symptoms they’ve been experiencing, while others may require specialist management of an existing condition.

Common reasons for referral include:

  • Endometriosis
  • Adenomyosis
  • Pelvic pain
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding
  • Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS)
  • Abnormal cervical screening results
  • Perimenopause and menopause symptoms
  • Fertility concerns
  • Pre-cancerous and cancerous gynaecological conditions

Whatever your reason for an appointment, your Grace gynaecologist will work with you to understand your concerns and develop a personalised treatment plan.

Preparing for your appointment

Before your consultation, it can be helpful to think about your symptoms and any questions you’d like to ask.

Your specialist may want to know:

  • When your symptoms started
  • How often they occur
  • Whether anything improves or worsens them
  • Current medications
  • Previous surgeries or medical conditions
  • Pregnancy or fertility history

If you’ve had recent blood tests, ultrasounds or other investigations, bringing these results with you can help your gynaecologist develop a more complete picture of your health.

What happens during the appointment?

Most first appointments begin with a chat. Your gynaecologist will review your referral, ask questions about your symptoms and discuss your medical history. This conversation helps them understand what may be contributing to your symptoms and whether any further investigations are required.

It obviously depends on the reason for your appointment, but your specialist may recommend blood tests, imaging such as ultrasound, or other diagnostic investigations. The goal of the first consultation is often to gather information, identify possible causes and create a clear plan moving forward.

Will I need an examination?

Not always. It will depend on the reason for your appointment and your symptoms.

Many initial consultations involve discussion and reviewing previous investigations. If a physical examination is required, your specialist will explain why it is being recommended and what it involves before going any further.

Understanding your treatment options

Gynaecology doesn’t always mean surgery. Many gynaecological conditions can be managed through medication, hormonal therapies, monitoring, lifestyle changes or allied health support through our dietitian and physiotherapist.

If surgery is required, Grace Private’s specialists are highly experienced in minimally invasive procedures. Their techniques allow for smaller incisions, faster recovery times and less disruption to daily life.

A multidisciplinary approach to care

One of the advantages of being treated at Grace Private is access to a team of specialists who regularly work together. Our gynaecologists collaborate across different areas of expertise, ensuring patients benefit from a huge amount of knowledge and experience when managing complex conditions.

Combined with our on-site endocrinologist, Women’s Health GPs, physiotherapist, psychologists and dietitian, this allows us to provide truly holistic care that supports every aspect of your health journey.

Taking the next step

Many women live with symptoms such as heavy bleeding, pelvic pain or hormonal concerns for years before seeking specialist advice. A gynaecology appointment is an opportunity to better understand what’s happening, access expert advice and explore the treatment options available to you.

If your GP recommends specialist care, remember to ask for Grace when requesting your referral.
